How to Keep Your Spiritual Life Healthy in a Crisis

1. It is not time to add new information. Give yourself permission to work with what you know.

2. Finding time to set aside for study or prayer may be extremely difficult. Instead of large chunks of time, know that even bite sized pieces bring nourishment.

3. God hears your tears, they are liquid prayers. (Ps 38:9) It’s ok to sit with Him and cry. He promises to be close to the broken hearted. (Ps 34:18) Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you (James 4:8).

4. The bathroom can be your most holy place. You are a captive audience!

5. Praise is a weapon. Use your voice, raise a Hallelujah. Let your voice sing out while doing the laundry, or the dishes, or tying your shoes. Your brain hears what you say, so let your brain hear your faith declared in song.

6. Remember who you are in Christ. Your identity creates the lens with which you look through to your whole life and each situation. Study scriptures that tell you who you are. Post them on your mirror, your door posts, or your dash of your car.

7. Shift the atmosphere in your home or vehicle. Ask Holy Spirit to fill you with His Presence. Turn on Christian music or Worship music. Sing out and declare God’s promises. Pray a short prayer recognizing your place as a daughter (or son), dedicate the area you are currently in to Him, ask Him to make His Presence known, and apply the blood of Jesus to where you are. The atmosphere will shift!

8. If you can’t find the strength to read the Bible, listen to the scriptures being read to you. There are a number of free tools and apps where you can play the audio version of your favorite translation. You can also set a timer and have it read to you while you drift off to sleep.

Revelation 1:3 says: “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.”

9. Get lots of sleep when you can. God speaks to you in your dreams. Remember that!

10. Rest is a weapon in your arsenal. Believe that the Word of God is true, real, and active. Let it do the work for you, especially when you are weary.

Crisis can happen to anyone, especially when you least expect it. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t complete all that you used to be able to complete. You are in a temporary mode where your body needs to focus on keeping you alive, safe, fed and dressed. Everything else is a bonus. Keeping your eyes on Jesus does not mean you are avoiding or diminishing your problems. Remember: when you are weak, He is strong! (2 Cor 12:7-10)

Most importantly:

11. Reach out to others. Keep your circle of influence small, but let them know what is happening. There is strength in numbers and safety in a multitude of counselors (Prov 11:4). You don’t have to do it all on your own. Ecclesiastes 4:10 reminds us that others are there to help us when we fall.
